Yajñopavītam (Sanskrit: यज्ञोपवीतम्), commonly called the sacred thread or poonal (Tamil), is a sacred cotton thread worn by those who have undergone the Upanayanam (thread ceremony). It symbolizes commitment to learning, discipline, and living according to dharma.

Significance

  • Represents a person's commitment to knowledge, self-discipline, and spiritual growth.
  • Traditionally worn over the left shoulder and across the chest, known as the Upavīta position.
  • It reminds the wearer of their daily duties, especially Sandhyāvandanam and Gayatri Japa.

Why does it have three strands?

The three strands have several traditional interpretations:

  • The three debts (Ṛṇas):
    • Debt to the Devas (Gods)
    • Debt to the Rishis (Sages)
    • Debt to the Pitrs (Ancestors)
  • They also symbolize:
    • Purity in thought, word, and deed
    • The three gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas
    • The divine trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva

Each complete Yajñopavītam usually contains three twisted strands tied together with a sacred knot called the Brahma Granthi.

The Brahma Granthi (Sacred Knot)

The knot signifies:

  • The unity of the Divine.
  • The connection between the individual soul (Ātman) and the Supreme (Brahman).
  • Firmness in following dharma.

When is it changed?

A new Yajñopavītam is generally worn:

  • During the annual Upākarman (Avani Avittam).
  • If the thread becomes damaged or impure.
  • During certain religious ceremonies as prescribed by tradition.

Yajñopavīta Mantra

The mantra recited while wearing a new sacred thread is:

यज्ञोपवीतं परमं पवित्रं
प्रजापतेर्यत्सहजं पुरस्तात्।
आयुष्य्यमग्र्यं प्रतिमुञ्च शुभ्रं
यज्ञोपवीतं बलमस्तु तेजः॥

Transliteration:

Yajñopavītam paramam pavitram
Prajāpater yat sahajaṁ purastāt
Āyuṣyam agryaṁ pratimuñca śubhraṁ
Yajñopavītam balam astu tejaḥ

Meaning:

"This sacred thread is supremely pure, born together with Prajāpati in the beginning. I wear this pure Yajñopavītam, which bestows long life, strength, brilliance, and spiritual radiance."

If you're preparing for Avani Avittam, I can also provide the complete Yajur Veda Upākarman procedure, including the Mahā Sankalpam, Kāmo'kārṣīt mantra, Yajñopavīta Dhāraṇa mantras, and Tamil, Sanskrit, or audio versions.
